This project was built on a recently purchased disused laneway to the rear of an existing cottage together with an existing studio space on the rear boundary of the cottage. The two-storey single residence was built containing two bedrooms above each other as well as an artist studio with a mezzanine, all overlooking an internal courtyard with plunge pool. A spacious open plan living room, dining room and kitchen open onto the main rear garden of the house drawing in the landscape into the house.
Between the existing cottage at the front of the site and the new house to the rear of the site is an urban forest that became the focal point for the new residence. This forest was the inspiration for the pavilion style structure that both opened onto it as well as drew the landscape into the house.
The house was designed to use natural lighting and ventilation techniques that require no artificial lighting during the day or artificial heating and cooling devices throughout the year.
